Corrosion is a common problem that the Pharmaceutical Industry faces to minimize its effects. This corrosion can vary in intensity. In many cases, even 316L and 304 stainless steel are affected.
Even when the level of corrosion is slight, it seriously complicates the cleaning and disinfection of stainless steel surfaces. On these rusted surfaces, the limits for microorganisms established by SOPs and Regulations are often exceeded. Additionally, the rusted surfaces close to the floor are places where spore-forming bacteria, such as Bacillus cereus or Bacillus subtilis, will be often found. That's the reason why Ultracleaning and Disinfection must be two physically separate steps.
Disinfectant/sporicidal chemical bases such as chlorine, glutaraldehydes or phenols leave residues that must be removed with pharmaceutical grade detergents. To a lesser extent, the same occurs with quaternary ammonium.
Sporicidal chemical bases are very oxidizing, so they should be used with caution and minimizing their frequency of use as much as possible.
